The Maldives, beyond the postcard

The Maldives sells itself on a single image: an overwater villa, a ladder into impossibly clear water, nobody else in frame. The reality is more interesting — and more variable — than the postcard suggests. After a dozen stays across the atolls, here is where we send our travellers, and why.

Which atoll, and when

Proximity to the seaplane terminal matters more than most realise. The closer resorts mean a short, scenic flight; the farther-flung add a domestic hop but reward you with quieter reefs and fewer boats on the horizon. For first visits we lean toward the central atolls; for repeat travellers, the south is where the diving turns extraordinary.

Book the villa for the water, but choose the resort for the house reef. That single decision shapes the whole trip.

The suites that deliver

An overwater villa is the cliché for a reason, but not all are equal. The ones worth the premium share three things: a private pool that holds afternoon shade, a reef you can snorkel straight from the deck, and enough distance from neighbours that the privacy is real rather than implied.

How we'd plan it

Three to four nights on the water, then — if the romance of total seclusion starts to feel like confinement — a few nights beach-side, or a second island entirely. The contrast is what people remember. We handle the transfers, the dining reservations, and the small touches that turn a good week into the one you talk about for years.
